The publication this week of the BBC Commissioning Supply Report for 2022/ 23 has revealed a spend of £1.6bn on original TV content, representing 28,000 hours.
The figure includes significant growth in TV commissioning spend in the Nations and English regions, now at nearly 60%.
The BBC worked with 351 independent production companies, with 65 of those being new suppliers.

We know the pressures and challenges currently faced across the sector, and we will focus our efforts on supporting talent and production across the UK, in continuing to deliver outstanding, distinctive content for our audiences.”
2022/23 report highlights include:
58% of Network TV commissioning spend was outside of London and it worked with 30 new TV producers based in the Nations and English regions
Working with 351 TV production companies
65 of the TV indies were new to the BBC
79% of the companies on the TV Small Indie Fund were based outside London and 52% were diverse-led
Funding ideas development with 258 companiesInvestment in over 40 schemes, initiatives and bursaries to grow the next generation of TV talent, with 2/3rds outside London
652 of TV productions were albert certified, building on a commitment to sustainable production
Continuing work with a wide range of partners£500k investment in the North East has already resulted in over 60 production placements, four companies in funded ideas development and the successful piloting of BBC Comedy’s regional partnership scheme

This Is Going To Hurt – 5 awards in total including Writer, Drama Series, Best Supporting Female and Best Actress for Ambika Mod and Ben Whishaw for Best Actor at the Broadcasting Press Guild.
Mood – Best Original Programme at The Broadcast Awards 2023 and Limited Series at RTS Programme Awards
Traitors – 3 wins across RTS Programme Awards and Broadcasting Press Guild.
The Real Mo Farah – won Best Documentary Programme at The Broadcast Awards and Best Documentary Mini at The BPG.
