Firecracker Scotland has been commissioned by BBC Scotland to revisit the murder of Barry Wallace in 1999, for a new, six-part series – Limbs in the Loch: Catching a Killer.
On a cold December morning, the limbs of a young man were found by chance in Loch Lomond, by police divers on a routine training exercise. Eight days later another bag – containing a head – is found washed up 60 miles away on Barassie Beach, Ayrshire.
In the days that followed, detectives revealed that the remains were those of a much-loved, young man, Barry Wallace, who lived in Kilmarnock some 50 miles away from the Loch. An international man hunt got underway for the prime suspect: William Beggs. But as the police closed in on the killer, the investigation took an unexpected turn following a series of shocking revelations about his past.
The series features interviews with those at the heart of the police operation, alongside victims and others close to the case. The series also explores how a dangerous individual was allowed to remain at large, as police attempted to bring him to justice.
Limbs in the Loch: Catching a Killer is a 6 x 30’ documentary for BBC Scotland and BBC iPlayer. The Series Director is John MacLaverty and the Producer is Lesley Shields. Firecracker Films’ Creative Director, Sam Emmery, is the Executive Producer and Emily Ricketts is the Production Executive. The BBC Commissioning Executive is Tony Nellany. It will be distributed by Passion Distribution.
